Representation of Men and Women - THE GODFATHER

What does the location tell us about the character?

The location is at an office which means that the character, head chief, often spends time at work. Which, in turn leads to an unhappy relationship with his wife/girlfriend.

What does the lighting tell us about the character?

The lighting is dark, with ambience as their is a contrast of light and dark. Their is bright lighting on the women and dark lighting on the man which shows that their is a barrier between the two characters. It also shows that he might be hiding something. Another reason why the man is in the shadow is that it could mean that h is in the shadow of his father. Although he does come out of the darkness of the light which could show how he is opening up to her.

How are the characters positioned to each other?

The man is sitting down then gets up as he gets more frustrated, whereas the women is isolated from the other men, and the door is closed on her. Which could could also refer to the fact that she has been shut out off her husbands life, or more specifically, her husbands work life. Even though the women looks isolated, she takes up most of the screen, which could show that she has a important role in the movie.

Micro Cinematography - V for Vendetta

CHANCELLOR SUTLER'S INTRODUCTION CLIP:-
  • There are 5 Men at the table:-

All with a light shone on them as if they all have something to hide with the lighting making the background very dark and deep.
  • One leader, Chancellor Sutler:-

Chancellor Sutler is made to look very important by the amount of room he has in the shot, which is most of the space as it is a close-up shot. He is also able to seem more important than the men around the table as he is much larger than them.

V for Vendetta - NARRATIVE

V - His role is different because he is both protagonist and antagonist, tin which he rebels yet for the right morals. He is one of the main characters and as a vigilante and anti hero, he has to be anonymous. This effect, even though he's classed as a terrorist, leads you to side with him. The camera angles that are often used on V are close ups, which shows that he's an important person in the movie:-

Evey - Her role at the beginning of the novel is minimal, she doesn't really stand out as a strong character as she acts weak, and defenceless when faced by dangerous men at the start of the film. However, as the film continues, she gains strength in the pain and torture that she is put through by V. This leads us to relate to her as she seems the most sane person when she is most vulnerable in comparison to strong characters such as V:-

Creedy - Our immediate views of Creedy from the beginning is that he has secrets and is quite powerful from the start, this is mainly by the lighting that we get in his introduction to the movie. However as the film progresses, we see that he loses his power as his people start to rebel when V influences with his different power. Ending:-

Creedy: Die! Die! Why won't you die?... Why won't you die?

V: Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy. And ideas are bulletproof!

Alice in Wonderland : ALIEN STYLE

We were asked to recreate the familiar scenes and characters of Alice in Wonderland but to change it so that it had an alien theme. I teamed up with another student to create our work. I worked on the scenes of our incorporation in which I recreated two important scenes of Alice in Wonderland which was the Mad Hatter Tea party and the Door scene. Here's a collage of some ideas:

MACRO Analysis

There are 6 different points to consider when analysing a film, these are:

1. Mise-en-scene - This is everything in the scene such as:

  • The décor, which mainly consists of the props and set of a movie but where the director considers these with a deeper meaning, such as in V for Vendetta, when a rose is used to remind the victim of their history :-

  • The lighting is used to display what the director is trying to get across, whether its to provoke emotion from the viewer or to tell the story. In this scene for V for Vendetta, lighting is used to give clues about a character in the scene :-

  • Costumes are used to dress an actor according to his/her character. Another reason could be to establish their hierarchy level. In V for Vendetta, V wears a black cape, a wig, black clothing, black gloves and a mask to hide his skin that has been burnt when he was experimented on. But could also show the deeper meaning of how their peoples voices are so invisible to the government.

  • The Location is important in a film because it helps set the scene for the film and helps to display characters emotions. An example of this would be V's introduction to Evey because this is when Evey is most vulnerable, the director emphasises this as the scene is set at an abandon place in London at night :-

2. Narrative - It is important to look out for how the narrative is organised and structured because this could be in relation to the characters of the film.

3. Style - The style of a film is how the film has been shot and the characteristics of it, for example a black and white film would be called 'film noir'.

4. Genre - The genre of a movie is important because the producers will need to engage their target audiences in order to be successful.

5. Representation - This would be how things are portrayed in the film, this could be by using gender to represent the difference between male and female, or even race to show racial differences.

6. Meaning/Message - A meaning or message in a film is really important because if gives viewers something to think about as a deeper meaning/message makes a deeper plot.
